Dr. Satish Wate (b. Dec.1955) obtained Masters and Doctorate in Biochemistry from Nagpur University. Dr. Wate joined as a scientist and rose to the position of Director in August 2010 at CSIR-NEERI, Nagpur. CSIR-NEERI is an organization committed to excellence in environmental science and engineering and development of sustainable technology for rural, urban and industrial application. Dr. Wate was also assigned Additional charge of Director Central Leather Research Institute, Chennai in March 2015. CSIR-CLRI is organization committed to provide end to end solution for leather sector industries including product and environment. He started many innovative programs at NEERI during his long tenure and at CLRI during short tenure yielding very good results on R&D and technology platform and provided visibility to the Institutes on Societal front. He coordinated CSIR activities through technology interface during Disaster at Chennai providing Safe water, food, clothes and medicines to flood hit people. He handed over charge of both the Institutes on 31st December, 2015 on superannuation. He has assumed charge of Chairman, Recruitment and Assessment Board of CSIR, New Delhi on 1st August, 2016.

Dr. Wate’s areas of interest are Environmental Impact and Risk Assessment, Water Resource Management, Environmental Systems Design, Modeling and Optimization, Carrying Capacity Based Developmental Planning, Environmental Biotechnology, Wastewater Treatment and Environmental Materials for Field Applications. His major scientific contributions are in the areas of Environmental Impact and Risk Assessment, Wastewater Treatment and Environmental Biotechnology. He has designed and developed water safety plans with recourse to quantitative chemical and microbial risk assessment, greywater recycle plants in rural areas, wastewater treatment–cum–recycle systems for oil containing wastewaters from drill site and processing facilities, assimilative capacity based standards for discharge of treated wastewaters in marine area, biosensor for detection of pesticides, molecular imprinting polymers for detection of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, novel organo-lanthanide materials for environmental applications. He has successfully handled large number of projects with national and international agencies / organizations like The World Bank, UNDP, UNEP, WHO, UNICEF, and Asian Countries viz. UAE, Kuwait, Qatar and Philippines. Dr. Wate has been nominated on various National Advisory Committees of Ministries viz. DST; MOEF&CC; MWR, RD and Ganga Rejuvenation; MDWS etc. either as Chairman or Member. He was nominated by Hon'ble Governor of Maharashtra as senate member of RTM Nagpur university during 2010-2015. He was Member BCUD of SG Amravati University. During his regime as Director, NEERI, he has signed MOUs with many international and national academic and R&D institutions for bilateral cooperation. He has taken initiatives to translate technologies developed by NEERI to field for benefit of society. Currently technologies for drinking water, sanitation, ambient VOC monitoring, Solid Waste Management to recover value added products are deployed in various places. He is serving as Chairman / Member of various nationally important committees viz., Chairman EAC constituted by MoEFCC under Environment Act for projects related to violation of environmental clearance; Chairman EIA Policy committee of MoEF&CC, GOI; Chairman, Accreditation Committee of QCI / NABET; Chairman Water Sector for IMPRINT projects of HRD ministry; Co-chairman Water Technology committee of DST & Member of FIST committee in Earth and Environment, as well as Waste management; Member, technical committee of Ganga Project, Water Resource ministry; Member, National Accreditation Board for Education and Training, Delhi; Member, Sustainability Council, Aditya Birla Group; Emeritus Professor in Environmental Medicine, DMIMS, Wardha; and Independent Director, Ceinsys Tech Ltd Nagpur.

Dr. Wate has published about 85 research papers in international and 38 in national journals having high impact factor and presented about 130 papers in international and national conferences. He has contributed in ten books. Dr. Wate is designated as outstanding Professor in physical sciences by Academy of Scientific & Innovative Research (AcSIR) established by CSIR by Act of Parliament. He is recognized Ph.D. supervisor for IIT, Roorkee, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad, RTM Nagpur and SGB Amaravati University. Eleven students till date are awarded Ph.D. Dr. Wate while working on various R&D projects leading to development of environmental management plans for proposed developmental activities viz. industry, energy and infrastructure sector has prepared 644 technical reports. He has two patents to his credit. He has been conferred with VASVIK Award in the year 2013 for contributions to environment. He has also been conferred with Chemcon award 2014. He is Life member of many Professional Societies including Indian National Science Congress and Fellow of Institution of Engineers, Nagpur Chapter and Fellow of Maharashtra Academy of Science, Pune. Dr. Wate was appointed by Home Ministry, Rajbhasha Prabhag as president of Nagar Rajbhasha Karyanvayan Samiti for Nagpur City during 2010-2013.

He has, in connection with R&D exchange, business development and consultancy visited many countries including Bangladesh, Cuba, Indonesia, Japan, Kuwait, Netherlands, Oman, Philippines, Qatar, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Thailand, UK, UAE and USA
