The Library is a focal point for information on leather, footwear and allied disciplines, whether it be the science and technology, the economics and the commerce or the fashion and design aspects of leather and leather products. The library has in its leather collection rare books dating back as much as 100 years, the early editions of books authored by luminaries and doyens in the field and reports of various pre- and post- independence government committees.

The collection of leather journals in more than 15 languages is one of the strong points of the library and many of them are available from the first issue itself. In addition to monographs, journals and reports the leather collection also consists of Ph. D dissertations, both Indian and foreign.
The library strives to be a "national library for leather".
Other than leather and footwear, the library has books, periodicals and other print and digital materials relating to the bio-sciences such as biochemistry, bioengineering, biomechanics, biotechnology; chemical science and chemical engineering, environmental science and technology and polymer science and technology.
