The original mandate of the institution, at the time of inception, was to enable the Indian leather industry undergo transformation from the supplier of raw hides and skins into a reliable source of value-added leather products. That the Indian leather sector has undergone this transformation is a result of the role played by the institute as an enabling catalyst.

CSIR-CLRI is one such institute which has activities and thus the output and outcome in all four segments. For the purpose of reporting, the following are used as measurement indicators:

  • Public goods include the publications and human resource capacity built
  • Social goods include skill developed and society oriented activities from R&D outputs
  • Strategic goods include IP assets created
  • Private goods include technologies transferred
