FASHION FORECASTING
Travel of India in ‘fashion forecasting’ for leather
Travel of INDIA in ‘fashion forecasting’ for leather is an initiative to bring to the fore the ability of the Indian Leather Industry to take pro-active measures in fashion forecasting and design development by providing a scientific leather product development focus in the areas of colour forecasting, range building, design and retail analysis.
The outcome envisaged is to strengthen the Indian leather product design capabilities which would be reflected in product quality enhancement.
Leather has emerged as a fashion product. Colour, texture and other highlights add to the fashion values of creatively designed leather products. These add significantly to the value realization from leather products. Nations like India have remained in the backyard of fashion world in Europe for long. If India were to emerge as a strong global player in the world leather trade, all efforts to take proactive measures to be ready with the fashion leathers when the fashion does emerge, is crucial.
Design & Fashion Studio will now graduate From leap frogging to pole vaulting in fashion forecasting for leather

R & D IN SHOE DESIGN
Under the major lab projects of the Institute, Design & Fashion Studio will work on:
Design & Fashion Innovations for Leather and Leather Products
Comfort line of footwear :
In the context of FOOTWEAR, psychologically, a person picks up a ‘sports shoe immediately thinking that the shoe will give him/ her the desired comfort to the feet irrespective of the occasion for which he/she is wearing those shoes. The CSIR-CLRI project on COMFORT SHOES addresses the discerning who want to wear a good formal/ semi-formal ‘comfort’ shoe for men, women and for children. For comfort footwear, it’s what’s inside the shoe that counts. Foot beds often deliver the benefits from arch supports to metatarsal guards to simple cushioning. So, in order to prolong the life of a shoe, making the most of one’s investment, replacement of insoles that can be easily swapped out with the original is recommended. Due to the unique shape of the shoes that follow the natural contours of the foot, the footwear is customized to its signature silhouettes. Leather-lined versions would also be designed. Comfort shoe gives consumers the chance to experience the benefits of their unique design which has an arch support and helps relieve foot pain.
Plan of work:
- Criteria of comfort shoe and manufacturing technique
- Development of comfort index and thereof Material selection
- Optimization with the help of material & shoe testing
INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING FOR DESIGN STUDIOS
INDUSTRIAL ENGINEEERING OF SAMPLE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
ESSENTIAL OF INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING IN SAMPLE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
The sample development and the production processes are in the same season, somehow the sample development process is consuming more time than the production. For the concern to reduces the duration of sample development process by the analyzing the issues and difficulties in each stage of process. Further have to find a solution for the causes by fishbone diagram and it represents the problems clearly to diagnose and bring out the proper methodology for that.
Forecasting: Forecasting is the process of estimating needs and requirement in terms of the existing processing of the development of timing, quality, and location for the desired process and service. Good forecast should be accurate, reliable, timely, easy to understand and cost effective and can be range from the simple to the extremely complex.
Analysing issues and difficulties: By determining the various causes and problems in each stage of development process tends to provide appropriate solutions for the problems. For better reviewing of causes and difficulties through fishbone diagram provides clear and concurrent of the solutions.
Process Planning and Control: With the determined problems and difficulties, the scheduling of the work process and monitoring of the work and transparency of the work to the superior for the ease of understanding. Evaluation of the Process: Finally, the work evaluation provides the proper documentation for the future references and also to the continuous improvement.
Application of Industrial engineering concepts for design and development of leather products : The leather products sample development process consumes enormous amount of time and it needs to be undertaken with special attention and importance by the sampling department in industries in our country. In the present circumstances, leather products industries are geared up to engage on production and sample developmental applications at one go which is highly challenging for the industries to cope-up with the commitments like timely delivery of goods on time. Hence, it necessities to devise methods and processes in order to standardize uct development focus in the areas of colour forecasting, range building, design and retail analysis. The outcome envisaged is to strengthen the Indian leather product design capabilities which would be reflected in product quality enhancement.
TESTING & DESIGN
Under the major lab projects of the Institute, Design & Fashion Studio will work onSteel Shanks
Steel shanks are provided in between the heel and waist portion of the shoe to increase the rigidity of the shoe and its continuous function. However when the steel shanks are not sufficiently hard and flexible, they tend to break making the shoe not usable. This trend is more obvious in high heel shoes. To test the quality of steel shanks testing devices are available. But they are complicated in design and working under pneumatic pressure principle and also can be tested only on steel shanks and not on whole shoe. The new concept will work on mechanical principle and has the provision to test the whole shoe. Shoes with steel shanks were tested, validated and evaluated. Test results were statistically analysed and reported.
Importance of the proposed project in the context of current status: Fatigue resistance of insole/midsole containing steel shanks is done by fixing in the heel area and flexed at the bottom side of the shoe using mechanical provision. This step almost simulates the forepart flexing of the shoe during wear.
Re START as DESIGN & FASHION

The NEED: To strengthen our support to the Indian Leather Industry in the area of ‘fashion and design’ of footwear, the Design & Fashion Studio is set up into an independent unit of CSIR-CLRI (vide CLRI OM No: 21(4)/2018-EI dated 20 th April 2020). Design & Fashion Studio was announced on 1 st May 2020.
VISION
CLRI plays the role of a ‘design interpreter’ catalyzing the growth of the leather and leather products sector by motivating the members of the Indian Leather Fraternity to stay ahead of fashion in LEATHER and LEATHER PRODUCTS design.
Design & Fashion Studio will now graduate f rom leap frogging to pole vaulting in fashion forecasting for leather and strengthen our support to the Indian Leather Industry in the area of ‘fashion and design’ of footwear and leather products.
