Milestones

Milestones in the leather Technology Education

  • The year 1944 saw the Establishment of Alagappa Chettiar College of Technology, Guindy and in 1945, a 2 year post B.Sc. (PG) programme in Leather Technology, known as B.Sc. (Tech) was introduced and continued up to 1958.
  • The first Ph.D in Leather Technology was gloriously presented to Dr.E.C.Mathews in 1955.
  • 1956 saw the commencement of the 1st M.Sc. (Tech) by research degree
  • In 1957, 4 year B.Sc. (Tech.) programme was introduced and in 1961 this program was replaced with a 5 years B.Tech. Integrated degree programme in Leather Technology.
  • A 2 year M.Tech degree program in leather technology was introduced in 1963
  • On 4th September 1978, when Anna University was established, A.C. college of Technology became part of the same.
  • 1980 saw the introduction of a 4 year B.Tech. degree programme in Leather Technology
  • 1983 a 3 semester M.Tech. degree in Leather Technology was introduced.
  • In 1987, a M.Tech. degree in Footwear Science and Engineering was introduced.
  • With sponsorship from National Leather Development Program, certificate and diploma programmes for Master Technicians was introduced in 1992.
  • In 1996, M.S. (by research) programme commenced in the Department of Leather technology
  • The Leather Technology Mission enabled leather education from 1997 onwards.
  • In the year 2000, keeping in mind the need for developing professionalism among working technicians, a 7 semesters B.Tech (part time) degree programme in Leather technology was introduced.
  • From 2002 onwards the M.Tech degree programs were converted into a four semester course.
  • In 2004, CLRI is partnering National Institute of Fashion Technology in launching a degree course in design of leather products.
  • A human resource development mission is now launched in May 2004.
